Owners: What's your side of the story?
When I was just a little boy, I had my first experience of live football. It was a Saturday in the Easter school-holidays. My father took me to the other side of town to see my first proper match, starring my home-town team Maidstone United.
I nevertheless watched our team — a dire amateur side propping up the Isthmian League — get beaten by Wycombe Wanderers. How it all started: a home defeat, and bottom of the table.
In the s, a syndicate of local gents had bought 13 acres of green fields a short way into the countryside up the London Road. Primarily intended for cricket, cycling, and athletics, Fueld could also cater for a host of minor sports.
It had cost a lot of money to get into shape, and was anything but a financial success.
The best contender proved to be the most ambitious of several local clubs, Maidstone Invicta, who after six years Field of dreams Maidstone existence had gone pro in and changed their name to Maidstone United.
The spanking new Athletic Ground in top left : out among the orchards, and big as a cricket ground. Playing in black and yellow stripes, the team had started well, pulling off a remarkable hat-trick of Kent League titles by and going on to land the Kent Senior Cup KSC five times within a decade. Inthe Club tried to step up a level by joining the South-Eastern League, enabling them to play against the reserves of top clubs at grounds like White Hart Lane, Stamford Bridge, and Upton Park.
Unfortunately, it all proved a financial disaster — the perennial problem of a smallish town stuck out on Free chat in Islington Kentish peninsula — and the very existence of the Club was a matter for annual debate. Relief came along immediately after the Great War in the form of a Week Street-born sugar-daddy.
They were attracted like moths to Fiele flame, the best of them being the future Manchester City and Scotland captain Jimmy McMullan. They swept all before them, attracting crowds even as big as 12, to the Athletic Ground. Needless to say, practically the whole squad deserted, announcing the start of a half-century of under-achievement.
The financially supportive Supporters Club folded, and the Club was forced in to revert to amateur status. Regular thrashings and poor league positions became a feature for the next decade, and we nearly always fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup.
The only time the town came close to winning Black and white the Craigavon, the Kent Amateur Cup, over 3, Maidsotne out to see the Stones humiliated in the final by, would you believe, Aylesford Paper Mills.
Interest leached away; the Kent Messenger KM even stopped regularly listing the teams.
In the Committee, frustrated by rising ground Field of dreams Maidstone, decided to buy the freehold of the Athletic Ground outright. Three years on, in pursuit of a change of fortunes, they signed up to the Corinthian League, a new London-based amateur affair. To begin with, they were calamitously bad, regularly shipping cricket scores, and had to seek re-election. Inno sooner than unpopular chairman Alderman and future Mayor Arthur Clark Mxidstone finally resigned, we got a good team together, featuring no fewer than three England amateur internationals.
We Escort in the Birmingham won the league, along with a couple of other trophies. After thirty years of hurt, the town was as much amazed as delighted. All in on the act: our Corinthian League champions, finally in plain shirts.
In that team was a pair of long-serving club heroes, the first that I saw personally: Danny Wiltshire in goal, and Fred Baker at full-back.
